OUR MISSION

Youth are enduring a difficult time in history, suffering emotionally & socially, because of the 2020 Pandemic & continued fallout. These uncertain times have challenged their sense of safety & taught them to mistrust others leaving them with fear, poor communication skills, & lack of positive conflict resolution skills. They need help to break out of continued isolation. Adults, educators, & youth leaders need innovative ways to help them.

It is our mission to Activate Career & Workforce Readiness Through Community Service.
We give youth hands-on experiences empowering them with the social & emotional skills needed for self-awareness, self-confidence, self-management, & practice treating themselves & each other kindly. Early intervention is now called for to engage youth in experiences exploring their curiosity, courage, & confidence, use their voice, and help others while becoming good citizens prepared for work & careers.

"Mary Helen brings a wonderful positive energy to her workshops. She participated in a county-wide high school career event and brought her extensive knowledge of service-learning to students across the county in a fun and engaging way. I enjoyed collaborating with her on bringing this career-driven workshop to our students.“
Rachael Kobe, Counselor, Tomales High School (Shoreline Unified School District), Co-organizer of Sonoma County CareerFest

WHAT IS ACTIVATE

A workbook with flexible content and framework. It can enhance or wrap around the curriculum you are using in any middle- or high-school-age learning setting.

11–16-year-olds are the target; older youth can benefit as well. Vocational schools may find the workbook useful for their older teens/young adults.

Rich insights, thought-provoking ideas, and step-by-step instructions for work/career skills to prepare youth to move out into the greater society.

Needs that are not necessarily met in traditional school subjects and learning objectives are addressed. It offers youth opportunities to get out of the classroom and connect with their peers and community.

It has many fun activities and discussion prompts to motivate cooperative group communication. Using community – be it home, neighborhood, school, or beyond – as the practice ground for youth to learn more about themselves, job skills, people skills, communication skills, and relationship skills, to mention a few.

Social Emotional Learning skills like: resilience, hope, respect, trust, and gratitude, are threaded throughout the workbook.

“ I really appreciate the work you put into developing these modules. The students are gaining good insights! This has been a positive experience with this cohort.”
A Senior Director, Pre-Collegiate Programs Upward Bound Director, Sonoma State University, CA

HOW TO WORK WITH ACTIVATE

You may pick and choose from the chapters and activities in any sequential way that fits your current curriculum, goals, and objectives.

A young professional wanting to change jobs or careers can also benefit from the material. And while working in a group setting offers the most benefit, a young person can complete the workbook on their own with adult support.

Engaging with the workbook will require a facilitator: a leader, teacher, parent – whoever is working with the youth.

The facilitator can use the workbook chapters to support curriculum that is already in place, create projects, or they can create curriculum and pull content that supports the activities in the workbook.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mary Helen has an intuitive understanding of youth of all ages. She brings her rare combination of creative passion, perseverance, and volunteer experience with youth to a variety of educational settings and to her life’s work, which is dedicated to youth empowerment.  Her methodologies are centered in service learning, hands-on learning, and community connection.  She was invited to sit on the Minnesota Department of Education Teachers Service-Learning steering committee, was sponsored to attend national service-learning conferences, and has developed programs for integrating service learning in schools and youth groups.  She also brought her work to Sonoma State University. Community service has always been the hands-on model for her work. She believes that by helping others, young people enrich their own lives. It is also the perfect learning ground to develop job skills, as well as life’s soft skills, empathy, and self-awareness.

Mary Helen believes youth are our greatest resource and gives them voice, tools, and understanding to believe and trust in themselves through real-world experiences. Creating and testing their ideas for career and workforce readiness has helped thousands of youth.

Her vision, and work, spans four decades. It includes founding her own start-up, Spark-Y: Youth Action Labs, a nonprofit social enterprise venture to empower youth. As the founder, she was the original executive director and served as a board member for 10 years. Spark-Y: Youth Action Labs (www.spark-y.org), based in Minneapolis, MN, is still growing strong and engaging youth with amazing projects in STEM, for self-growth and civic engagement. The organization’s leadership includes the first youth members involved in the organization – the first youth she hired. The thriving organization proves, in practice, all of Mary Helen’s insights, methodologies and words to inspire and empower youth to positively engage with society. Activate’s workbook includes these same methods. Youth working with their peers is an important ingredient in the model’s secret sauce.

Mary Helen puts heart and creative energy into all her projects. Activate is her current entrepreneurial education venture in the youth empowerment and career readiness education space. She is extremely passionate about the urgent need to help youth in these uncertain times, and sincerely hopes it will bring value to youth globally.
